Assembly * Always consult your teacher if you are not sure how to put together your instrument. * NEVER force the parts of your instrument together. * Clarinets play the best when a moist reed is used. Get into the habit of soaking the thin end of the reed in your mouth while you are assembling your clarinet. * When assembling the clarinet you may need to apply a small amount of cork grease on each of the corked joints. When properly used, cork grease should allow you to assemble your clarinet without using excessive force. * Always make sure that you have extra reeds, cleaning swabs and cork grease. Maintenance * Use cork grease as needed. Too little will cause the cork to crack. * Do not leave the reed attached to the mouthpiece. This will shorten the life of the reed and cause it to collect germs. * Wipe off your fingerprints from the keys after every use. A clean, non-treated cotton cloth will work the best. NEVER clean your clarinet with water. * Clean out the moisture from your instrument with an absorbent cotton drop swab after every use. Clean the inside of all sections of the clarinet. Removing the moisture from your clarinet before putting it away each time will prolong the life of the pads. * Always store your instrument in its case with the lid closed when not in use. This will lower the risk of damage. * Do not put anything (including sheet music) inside the case with your instrument that does not belong. Closing the case with extra contents can cause damage to the delicate keys. Also, make sure that all the latches are securely closed before transporting your instrument. * Do not leave your clarinet in the car or in direct sunlight. This could cause the instrument to crack. The cello is one of the bass voices of the stringed instrument family which includes the violin, viola, cello and double bass. (The double bass is the lowest-pitched instrument of the orchestra, sounding an octave in pitch lower than the cello.) The cello’s proportions resemble those of the violin, except players hold its body between their legs and its weight is supported by an end pin that touches the floor. It has four strings, tuned an octave below those of the viola. The cello has a warm and rich “singing” quality of tone which is said to most resemble the human voice. How to Bow a Cello:

This is an on going project for which they will receive a grade. In addition, it will be a valuable study/practice tool for them. Students will be given time in class to complete this but they must have the right supplies/equipment in order to do so.
The following is a list of what your student will need:
Your student is expected to bring the notebook, and supplies each class period. Student will be given credit for having their notebooks, neatly arranged assignments, handouts, music as instructed. All handouts should be in their notebook at all times. DUE DATE: Notebooks and supplies are due Monday, Aug. 13 (Band) and Tuesday, Aug. 14 (Orchestra). With teacher guidance, the band students have decided on an instrument to play.
(Orchestra students will begin this process Wednesday 8/8.) Your student will receive a very important form when they come to class on Thursday 8/9. (Orchestra students will receive their form in class Wednesday 8/8.) Ask your student for this Cobb County Instrument Check Out Sheet. Parents, please complete this form and have your student bring it back to class ASAP!! It is very important that ALL information written on this form be legible, accurate, and is signed by the parent/guardian, not the student. Due to a limited supply, students are allowed use of school instruments on a "First come, First Serve" basis. That is, the first students to return the completed form to me will be the first to have use of a school instrument. If you wish to purchase or rent your own instrument that is fine; however, per Cobb County policy, no student will be allowed to use a school instrument of any kind PRIOR to my receiving this completed form. The longer you wait to return the form the further behind your student will become. Looking forward to working with your student on their musical journey!! Violins
